Tape Formats

VHS

The Video Home System (VHS) developed by JVC in the mid 1970s quickly became the dominant video format over rival Betamax. In EP mode, recordings of over 6 hours are possible.

VHS-C

Introduced in 1982 for use in compact consumer camcorders, the Compact VHS tape uses the same tape and recording standard as the full size version and plays in standard VCRs with an adaptor.

8mm Video/Hi-8/Digital-8

Although similar in size to an audio cassette, the 8mm video format was developed for compact camcorders in the 1980s. Later developments saw the pro-sumer Hi-8 version and the Digital-8 which employs DV technology.

Mini-DV

Digital Video (DV) cassettes were introduced in 1995 and gained popularity over other consumer formats due to their compact size and superior picture quality.

DVCAM

Using similar technology to Mini-DV, this professional video format records a richer and more stable picture with a 15 micron scan rate compared to the 10 micron scan of Mini-DV. It is also available in a larger size tape capable of 184 minutes of recording.

Betacam

This professional 1/2 inch video format has been in use by many studios since 1982. Its variations, Regular, SP and Digital Betacam, offer smaller cassettes for camcorders, while both small and large tapes play in decks.

U-Matic 3/4 inch

Introduced in 1971, the U-matic 3/4 inch video cassette replaced early reel-to-reel video recording systems. Cassettes come in 2 sizes and were typically used for news and corporate productions.
